Obituary of Winifred E. MacAndrews

The death of Winifred Ellen MacAndrews of Saint John, wife of the late, F. Douglas MacAndrews, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home, in her 104th year. Born at Saint John on March 21, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Roberta (McBride) Doherty. Winifred graduated from Saint John High School and led the Province with the highest Academic Standing. She became a teacher in the 1920s where she taught in one room schools, she taught at Albert School on the West Side of Saint John, then moving to Ottawa where she became a Supply Teacher. Winifred supported the Arts such as Symphony and Theater and the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra. She was a member of the Saint John Naturalist Club, a life member of the United Church Women’s Council at St. David’s Church and an active volunteer for the New Brunswick Museum. Winifred was also a Foster Parent, helping children in the Philippines and was acknowledge for her work in the Laubach Literacy International. She enjoyed horseback riding and canoeing and loved to play the piano until she was 101 years old. Survived by her sons, Robert D. MacAndrew (Anne) of Hampton, NB and Neil L. MacAndrew (Colette) of Ottawa, ON; daughter, Ellen Mackay-Bell (Gordon) of North Saanich, BC; five grandsons, Terence D., R. Timothy, Daniel, Evan and Fraser and one niece, Audrey Anderson. Winifred was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Doherty. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, 634-7424, with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM . A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from Brenan’s Chapel at 10:00 AM. Interment to take place at Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Doctors Without Borders or to the Conservation Council of New Brunswick or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
