Obituary of Darryl J.S. Olsen

It is with the deepest of regret and sadness that we inform you of the untimely passing of Darryl James Scott Olsen. His unexpected death occurred Saturday, July 31st near Anagance, NB. Born April 6th, 1972 in Saint John, NB, he was the third child of Harold Olsen and Judy Olsen (Harding), both of Saint John, NB. Darryl was raised in East Saint John and stayed true to his roots, making his home with his loving wife Brenda (Whitney) in Silver Falls, and raising their two beautiful children, Corey and Kurtis, and nephew Brendan Whitney of Saint John, NB, to whom Darryl was like a father. Graduating from Simonds High School in 1991, Darryl went on to work for the Catholic Cemeteries in Saint John, where his work ethic saw him rise from groundskeeper to foreman, to his final position as Manager, following in the footsteps of his father. Darryl was a natural inspiration to all those around him. This was truly evident to those who witnessed him at the local arenas and sports fields as either a coach or a cheering parent. As a coach with the Forest Hills Falcons hockey teams, he kept the hallways full of inspired children chanting "Falcons! Falcons! Falcons!" all the way from the dressing room to the ice. There was no doubt that Coach Darryl was in the building. Countless children owe their positive experiences in hockey to him. Darryl was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Muriel Harding (Kennie) of Saint John, NB, paternal grandfather Henry Olsen of Maces Bay, NB, and mother-in-law Jean Whitney (Gunn). Along with his parents, loving wife, and children, Darryl is survived by his stepmother Sandra (Duplisea), his brothers, Doug of Saint John, NB and John (Lori) of Summerville, NB, his sister Heather of Saint John, NB, grandfather Ronald Harding of Saint John, NB, grandmother Doris Olsen (Hanson) of Clover Hill, step-sisters Pam Defazio (Randy) of Saint John, NB and Michelle Chandler (Blaine) of Winslow, PEI, step-brother Tony Moore( Julie) of Saint John, NB, father-in-law Laurie (Lisa) Whitney of Rowley, NB, sisters-in-law Wendy Hughes of Cambridge, ON and Lori Whitney of Saint John, NB, brother-in-law Matthew Whitney of Saint John, NB, and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, 634-7424, with visiting on Monday from 7-9 PM and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Liturgy will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from St. Pius X Church, Somerset Street, at 1:00 PM. Interment to take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. At Darryl’s request, casual dress is preferred. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Forest Hill Falcons Hockey Program.
