Obituary of Rubert Elijah Merritt

Rubert Elijah Merritt of Welsford, husband of Marianne (Johnson) Merritt, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Cliffordville, New Brunswick on December 23, 1936, he was a son of the late Allan E. and Ethel M. (Lawton) Merritt. Rubert worked for Irving Oil Limited for many years, and then drove school bus until he retired in 2001. He was a fan of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Saint John Sea Dogs, and enjoyed watching baseball as well. He had a passion for hard work all his life. In addition to his wife, Rubert is survived by three sons, Paul Merritt of Welsford, Neil Merritt (Cindy) of Charlottetown, and Allan Merritt of Welsford; a daughter, Theresa Stewart (Ted) of Saint John; grandchildren Sheri Stewart, Chelsea Stewart, Miranda Merritt, and Elijah Merritt; brothers Walter Merritt of Upham, Isaac Merritt of Upham, and Jim Merritt of Grand Bay; sisters Marion Doyle (Denzel) of Ottawa, Beryl Rideout of Ottawa, and Dot Warner of Edmonton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rubert was predeceased by a sister, Mary Lomax. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, with visiting on Thursday from 7-9 PM and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Chapel. A private family interment will take place in St. James Anglican Cemetery, Browns Flat. For those who wish, remembrances to the Children’s Wish Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
