Obituary of Betty Joan Flewelling

Surrounded by her family, Betty Joan Flewelling of Saint John, wife of Walter B. Flewelling, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, following a lengthy illness. Born at Saint John on March 19, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Walter C. and Avis L. (Kelly) Bauer. Joan believed in faith, family, friends, and community, and gave unselfishly of herself to these causes. She was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, where she served on Vestry and as Warden, and was a member of the Altar Guild, the Ladies’ Guild, the Choir, and Cursillo. A lover of all things outdoors, Joan enjoyed spending time with friends and family golfing, curling, and fly fishing on the Miramichi. She was Past President of the Ladies’ Association of the Westfield Golf and Country Club, as well as being a member of the Thistle St. Andrew’s Curling Club, the Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons, and the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Joan also enjoyed a good game of bridge with her many friends. In addition to her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Joan will be dearly missed by her three sons, Gordon (Susan) of Prince George, BC, Richard (Christine) of Kelowna, BC, and Stephen (Sherry) of Dover, N.H. She was the much loved grandmother of Leanne Lomax-Forden of Saskatoon, SK, Patricia Peters (Lomax) of Cuba, Tony Lomax and Kaley Lomax of Toronto, ONT, Michael, Melanie, and Jennifer Flewelling of Prince George, BC, Sarah Hutt (Flewelling) of Vanderhoof, BC, and Grant and Laura Flewelling of Dover, N.H, USA; and great grandmother to Lucas, Keagan, Bridget, Brooklyn, and Konnor. Joan is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Lomax; and by her sister, Phyllis Stillwell. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday 7-9 and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM from the Church of the Good Shepherd, 668 Manawagonish Road, Saint John West. The Venerable Arthur Gregg will be officiating, with interment at a later date in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery.
