Obituary of Spearos Lahanas

We are sad to announce the passing of Spearos Lahanas on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at his residence. Born Oct 14, 1945, in Saint John New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Anthony and Cleopatra (Marcus) Lahanas.

Spearos spent a significant portion of his life living in Virginia with his mother, Cleo, returning to Saint John upon her death. Upon his return home, Spearos found solace in the arts and finding treasures at thrift shops. He developed the skill of importing exotic clothing from around the world, which sometimes attracted compliments of those who admired his taste. He could be seen walking all over, and procured many lasting friendships with local poets, artists, and collectors.

For years prior to the pandemic, Spearos never missed an opportunity to act as emcee for O'Leary's open mic nights, sharing his life's stories in an entertaining and provocative manner and singing delightful hits from the 50s and 60s, bringing cheer to all who participated. He had an extensive knowledge of films from the 30s to the 60s.

When the pandemic hit, Spearos could be heard over the soundwaves on 107.3 FM and acted as guest host for David Carr's radio show- he even sang Christmas Carols at Jiffy Shoe Repair to passersby. He will be sorely missed for his uncommon intelligence and colourful and bouyant presence.

Spearos is survived by his brother-in-law, Demetre “Jim” Bountalas; nephews: Jon Bountalas (Marilyn), Tony Bountalas (Carol), George Bountalas (Iliana), and Michael Bountalas (Krista); grand-nieces: Mary Tipping (Jameson), Celina Bountalas, and Dimitra Bountalas; grand-nephew, Dimitris Bountalas; and great-grand-nephews, Mavrik and Maxis Tipping; as well as extended family in Virginia.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Evanthia Bountalas; and nephew, Peter Bountalas.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday, May 12, 2022, from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, from Brenan’s Chapel at 11 am, followed by interment in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Saint John Arts Centre would be appreciated by the family. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.BrenansFH.com.
