Obituary of John William Hickie

It is with sadness in our hearts that the family of John Hickie, husband of Joan (Evans Shillington) announces his unexpected passing, which occurred on Monday, June 6, 2022. John was born on May 27, 1949, in Saint John, NB, and was the son of the late, William and Annie (Goosney) Hickie.

John will be remembered as a “Jack of all trades”, who several friends would say was a “Master Carpenter”. He was an active man, who took great pleasure in spending time with his family and friends. He could often be found fishing, hunting also known as: “taking his gun for a walk”, canoeing on the Hammond River, or mowing his lawn on his tractor or in the winter snow-blowing his driveway. John’s family remember him as a bit of a prankster who was a big kid at heart. He would surprise his beloved grandchildren with water balloon and water gun fights resulting in infectious laughter which filled his heart with more joy than can be written here. He was a card, who adored making his loved one’s smile. John was social and loved his friends. He enjoyed sharing stories with them and loved even more to give out his advice on life or how to fix literally anything. He would drop in a for a visit and spend time talking for hours, those who knew and loved John, know he loved to talk. John also liked to go to Fredericton to visit Tom and family and spend time on the rivers there canoeing or hiking through nature trails.

He was a Carpenter specializing as a Cabinet Maker Journeyman. John’s talent when it came to woodworking is simply not comparable. He was a perfectionist in the best kind of way. Every cut, every piece fitting perfectly. His kitchens were well known to look like they came from a magazine. John loved to build so much that he built not one, but three houses for the family which he was very proud of. He enjoyed working on vehicles and taking things apart, he truly was a Mr. Fix It. He loved all animals and they loved John, but Rascal, his border collie held a very special place in John’s heart being his little shadow going on many adventures together.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joan; his sons Michael (Kelly) and Peter Hickie; daughter, Angela (Chris Greer) Hickie; step-son, Bryan (Carole) Evans; step-daughters: Tracy Evans, Sherry (Derrick) Fitzgerald; Angie (Dave) Dempster; brother, Tom (Pam) Hickie; sister: Barb (Conrad) Berube; special grandsons: Ryan and Brody Greer; step-grandchildren: Evan, Ella, Dylan, Kenzie, Kaela, Grace, Claire, Connor, Carson, Christopher, Chloe, Erin (Nick Marsh) and Kristen; great granddaughter, Ainsley Marsh; mother of his children, Eleanor Hutchinson; as well as several nieces, nephews, friends and his special fur baby Rascal. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Linda Bartlett.

Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd, Quispamsis (849-2119). Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, from 11:00-2:00 PM, with a celebration of John’s life to follow at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Kennebecasis Funeral Home.
