Obituary of L. John Stevenson

Dr. L. John Stevenson of Rothesay, husband of Lola A. (Baker) Stevenson, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 17, 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital, following a period of failing health. Born at St. John’s, Newfoundland on January 25, 1925, he was the son of the late William and Louise (Snelgrove) Stevenson. Dr. Stevenson was a graduate of Memorial University and Dalhousie University Medical School. He then studied Internal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Massachusetts at Springfield, Massachusetts, where he met his wife, Lola. After studying Radiology at McGill University, he worked in Port Colburne, Ontario and then relocated to Saint John, where he eventually became Head of the Department of Radiology. A kind and smart man, Dr. Stevenson was a member of the Saint John Medical Society, the Riverside Golf and Country Club, as well as St. David’s United Church. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and was an avid gardener. His greatest joy in life was his family, whom he adored. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Dr. Stevenson is survived by his children, Linda G. Stevenson of Vancouver, Judith A. Ritchie (Kevin) of Fredericton, and Donald W. Stevenson (Peggy) of North Palm Beach, Florida; four granddaughters, Hannah, Carli, Ava, and Celene Stevenson; a sister, Joan McLeod of Truro; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express its gratitude to the caring staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, 5th floor, for the kindness and comfort they showed to Dr. Stevenson during his stay there. Although there will be no visitation, relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service, which will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. David’s United Church, Rothesay, with a reception to follow at Shadow Lawn Inn. Interment will take place privately in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Salvation Army or the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family, in lieu of flowers.
