Obituary of Gerald Peter Heffernan

It is with broken hearts that the family of Gerald Peter Heffernan announce his passing on September 19th, 2022, at Bobby’s Hospice. Born in Saint John, NB, on April 26th, 1938, he was the son of Gerald Phillip and Katie (nee DeGeer) Heffernan.

 

Peter was an accomplished man who loved his family, community and held a strong religious faith. He worked at London Life Insurance for 35 years and was the Manager of his location until his retirement.

 

Wanting to give back to his community he joined various organizations. He is the past president of Canadian Association of Cerebral Palsy, Life Underwriters, Parish Council and Choir, and the Westside Food Bank; a member of the Sisters of Charity, Board of Directors for the United Way & Family Services, Southern NB representative of Post-Polio Canada, and Board Member for Non-Profit Housing; a knight of the 3rd and 4th degree with the Knights of Columbous; and ran for City Council 83 & 86.  Being a man of faith, he was a choir member at Our Lady of Assumption and Holy Spirit Parish – St. Rose Church and did pastoral core work at St. Joseph’s and Saint John Regional Hospital.

 

Peter always strived to further educate himself and became a graduate of the Lay Formation of Diocese of Saint John and obtained a Diploma through the Ministry Course of St. Francis of Xavier.

 

Peter is survived by his wife Barbara Ann (nee Brewster); son Michael (Cathy); daughter Lisa (Mike); step-daughters Gloria, Terry and Tina; grandchildren Timothy (Kera) and Jessica; step-grandchildren Jennifer (Joe), Saxon and Alison; great-granddaughter Taeya; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his first wife Nadine Marie, second wife Lynn McCarthy, parents, son Patrick, brothers Brian and David, and step-daughter Kelly.

 

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB (634-1701). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2022, for 9:30 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption (360 Dufferin Row, Saint John). Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Family and friends are then welcomed back to the Assumption Center for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
