McLaughlin, Mary Catharine

 

It is with great sadness that the family of Catharine McLaughlin of Saint John, NB wish to announce her peaceful passing at Carleton Kirk Nursing Home on Friday, December 2, 2022.

 

Born in Sussex on October 1, 1936, Catharine was the daughter of the late George B. and M. Catharine Whalen.

 

Besides her parents, Catharine was predeceased by her loving husband of 47 years, L. Patrick (Pat) McLaughlin and an infant daughter Catherine; brothers George, Eddie (Joan) and sister-in-law (Julia Weston).

 

Catharine is survived by sons, Pat (Cindy) of Calgary and Bill of Saint John; daughter, Jenn McLaughlin of Saint John; grandson Drew (Lacey) of Kelowna; granddaughter Emma of Calgary; great grandchildren Scotia and Bowen (Kelowna) and four brothers John (Daisy), Dave (Tina), Bill (Judy) and Jim; several nieces and nephews.

 

Catharine was very active in the community including being a:

  • Member of the Friends of Calligraphy Guild
  • 50+ year member of the CWL of St. Peter’s Parish
  • The first President of the UNBSJ part-time Students Association
  • The first provincial President of OPTAMUS
  • A member of the St. Elizabeth’s Society
  • Board member of Can-Cope/Cancer support group
  • A member of the Ray Butler Thursday Painters Group

 

Amongst her many outstanding qualities, Catharine was an extremely positive individual who made a meaningful contribution to her community and thrived and lived for friends and family. Grammy invested countless hours and days watching and supporting her grandchildren in various sporting and academic activities, as well as going on an unforgettable family Christmas vacation to Disney World.

 

Pat, Bill, and Jenn would like to thank everyone for their condolences and extend a special thank you to Cindy, Kim and the staff of Carleton Kirk who are simply just outstanding humans.

 

A Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Redeemer Parish, 316 Somerset Street, Saint John, on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 11:00 am. Interment to follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the Mass will be livestreamed via the Funeral Home website.  Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home (634-7424), 111 Paradise Row, Saint John.
