Obituary of Martina Antoinetta Ryan

It is with great sadness the family of Martina Ryan announces her passing on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the Turnbull Nursing Home (Saint John). Born in Smith’s Creek (Sussex), N.B. on March 3, 1930, Martina spent many happy years in Smith’s Creek and later, on Douglas Avenue and Fort Howe in the North End.  

Martina is predeceased by her parents, Martin and Hilda, one brother, Gerard Ryan, and four sisters, Loretta O’Keefe, Kathleen Ryan, Jean Ryan, and Hilda Detwiler. 

She is survived by one niece, Mary O’Keefe (Michael) Hevrin, and five nephews, Gerry O’Keefe (Brigeen), Michael, Paul and John Detwiler, and Kyle Ryan.

Martina was a beloved schoolteacher who taught grades 1 & 2 in various schools in the Saint John area such as Saint Peters, Saint Pius, M Gerald Teed Memorial, and others.  

The family would like to thank the exceptional care of the Staff and Nurses at Turnbull Nursing Home for the kindness and compassion shown to our aunt during her time there.   

Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). In keeping with Martina’s wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, from 2 pm – 5 pm. The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at 12 pm at Holy Redeemer Parish (St. Pius X Church - 316 Somerset St, Saint John, NB). Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery (327 Westmorland Rd, Saint John, NB) Donations to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
