Obituary of Mark Andrew McAuliffe

It is with heavy hearts but gratitude for a life filled with love, generosity, and laughter that the family announces the passing of Mark Andrew McAuliffe, on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born June 4, 1941, in Saint John, N.B., he was the son of the late John and Blanid (nee Sharkey).

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary McAuliffe (nee Montague); son Montague “Monte” (Andrea) McAuliffe; grandchildren Christian and Madeline McAuliffe; sisters Mary-Lou Kerr and Carol (Gordon) Shaw; as well as many sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers: John, Gregory, David, and Gerard; and sisters Rosemary Milan and Patricia Jensen.

He was a graduate of Simonds High School, St. Thomas University, and the University of New Brunswick. A teacher and school administrator for almost 3 decades, he taught at Aberdeen School and St. Malachy’s Memorial High School. He served as Vice Principal at New Albert and Bayside Junior and Principal at Grand Manan Junior High, St. Joseph’s, and Prince Charles.

Mark was a past president and honourary member of the Carleton Curling Club, former chairman of the Rocmaura Foundation Board, and past member of Westfield Golf Course. He was also a member of the YMCA, Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary 17984, and Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He especially enjoyed volunteering with the Hillcrest Baptist Church Soul Food Program.

For many wonderful summers, he relished the trailering life and community at Harding’s Point. He was an excellent cook and often entertained his friends and family. He faithfully played crib on Wednesday nights and was well known for helping others whenever he could, whether it was friends and family, the children in his schools or people in his community. If you needed anything, he would be there to roll up his sleeves with a smile on his face and his signature booming laugh. He was more than generous with his time and lived a life in service to others. He will be missed beyond measure.

Resting at Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB (634-1701), visitation for Mark will be on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, from 2:00–4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, for 12:00 PM at the Our Lady of the Assumption Church (360 Dufferin Row) with interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery.
