Obituary of Raymond Maber
Ray Maber passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and under the exceptional care of the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital on November 23, 2024.
Ray was predeceased by his parents, Bert and Verna Maber, and his sister, Nancy Dempster. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Margot (McPhee), daughters Candace Snowdon (Tim), Kris(ta) Doucet (Robert), and Kelsey Emuss (Dave). He was a proud grandfather to Jessica, Taylor, Derek, Ryan, Sara, and Cameron and will be fondly remembered by his nephews Pat, Mike, Tim, Jim, and Jason, his niece Michelle, his brother Ernie Maber (Carol), and dear friends Richard and Shirley Snowdon.
Born in Saint John on August 21, 1943, Ray spent much of his childhood in Martinon, where he formed lifelong friendships. He attended Vocational School (now Harbour View High), where he met the love of his life, Margot. Shortly after graduating, they married, beginning a partnership that would last a lifetime.
Ray’s professional journey led him to NBTel (now Bell Aliant), where he worked for 35 years. Known for his curiosity and dedication, Ray contributed to several departments during his tenure and earned the respect of colleagues and friends. He was an active participant in the corporate curling league and a past president of TelecomPioneers of Canada, roles that reflected his commitment to both his work and his community.
Beyond his career, Ray owned a few apartment buildings, enjoying the process of fixing them up and meeting new people along the way. A man of many talents, he found joy in both the challenges and friendships this endeavor brought. After retirement he became a Mason where he worked daily at the Germain Street masonic hall. We know his fellow Masons will miss him dearly.
Ray and Margot shared a vibrant life, often wearing out their passports with trips to their favorite spots in Maine. From extended stays on the coast in every season to day trips to Marden’s, their adventures were a source of joy. Camping, curling, and hosting lively card parties were also staples of their social life, and gatherings at the Mabers' home were always memorable. Over the years, their love only grew stronger, creating a bond that inspired everyone around them.
Above all, Ray was a family man. He welcomed his sons-in-law as friends and confidants, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He treasured watching them grow into the strong, kind, and loving people they are today. As a father, Ray had a unique ability to connect with each of his daughters, whether it was playing tea party, fixing furnaces, or lending a listening ear. He was always there with advice, laughter, and unwavering support.
Ray’s zest for life knew no bounds. At 76, he went zip-lining, and at 78, he decided to learn how to ride a bike again. As one friend aptly put it, "Ray was never old a day in his life." He was a friend to all and a constant source of inspiration.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital emergency room and SICU for their compassionate care, as well as to dear neighbours Mo and Mike for their unwavering support.
Funeral arrangements will be under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424), where a time of visitation will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024 from 2 to 5 pm. A Masonic Service will take place at 1:45 pm prior to visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 1 pm from the Shrine Centre, 14 McLaughlin Crescent, Saint John East.
