Obituary of Carmela "Carmie" Jean Scaplen
With profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Carmela Jean Scaplen “Carmie” who left this world surrounded by love, after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer.
Daughter of Frank and Pauline Fewer (deceased), Carmie was the devoted wife of Graeme Scaplen for 53 years. Their love story began when she was just 15, and from that moment, they became each other’s unwavering pillar of strength. Their relationship is a true example of a lifelong commitment and love through the circle of life.
A loving mother to three children—each of whom were her favorite :) —Leah (Brad), Derek (Heather), and Curtis. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother
to Hudson, Lila, Brady, Savannah, Jack, Lucy, Gracie, Brady, and Maddie. To them, she was more than a grandmother—she was their sunshine, their safe
place, and their greatest champion.
She was also a cherished sister to Brian Fewer (Wife Marron, children Sean, Suzie and Craig) and Fran Cook (Husband Chris, children Nick & Pat) and she dearly
loved her niece and nephews.
Our family would like to especially acknowledge our own angel, Carmie’s sister Fran, who was not only a sister but a caregiver, warrior, and constant source of strength. She gave selflessly in every capacity, walking side by side with Mom through every step of her battle. Her unwavering love and devotion are a testament to the power of family and an example of what it truly means to show up when it matters most.
Carmie was a woman of unshakable faith, never once asking, "Why me?" during her battle. She found peace in the belief that "there is a power greater than me at work, and someday, everything will make sense". She lived by her values—love, faith, compassion, gratitude, and loyalty—and, true to her nature, she never just spoke these words; she lived them. She was the first to serve when others were in need, offering prayers, actions, and comfort without hesitation.
Her kindness was her superpower, but never mistaken for weakness. She was strong, wise, and fiercely protective of those she loved. Whether through her lifelong friendships with her "dance girls", her bridge crew, lunch dates, or her beloved "Bluff" crew, Carmie was the glue that held many together.
Above all, she believed in making moments matter. Whether it was a simple phone call, a sunset, or a grandchild’s birthday, she embraced every moment with gratitude. She was a shining example of the power of infinite love. As much as she gave, we all knew she had so much more to give. She taught us all that when in doubt, just love more.
A special thank you to the doctors, nurses, hospital staff and hospice staff who walked alongside her in her journey, providing every tool and opportunity to continue the fight—until, finally, she could go peacefully.
Carmie’s legacy of love, faith, and action lives on in all who were blessed to know her. In her own words, she reminds us: "Our time on earth is like a grain of sand in an hourglass. There is so much more for our spirit once we pass on."
