Stewart Gilbert

Obituary of Stewart Brian Gilbert

It is with sadness and gratitude for a life very well lived that the family of Stewart Brian Gilbert announce his passing on April 7 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by love.

Born Nov 18 1952 to Everett Gilbert and Norma (Joyce) Gilbert. Raised by his grandparents Stan and Helen Gilbert (Keating) who he adored.

Survived by his wife Valerie (Moldovan)  of 47 years, and children Sarah Hennessy (Josh), Laura Dort (Mike), and Ryan (Jessy Stuart). Precious grandchildren Ryker Gilbert, Ella Hayward, Molly Dort, and Katelyn and Griffin Hennessy.  Sister in law Leslie Moldovan (Mark Singer), brothers Ed (Beth) and John (Barb) Gilbert and nieces Vicki, Julie, and Jessica.  Predeceased by his parents and grandparents along with brother Stanley, sister Helen, in laws Harry and Bernice Moldovan, and nephew Karim.

His memberships at the Carleton Curling Club and the Adanac, along with his years playing for the KBM Aces and Duguay Roofers all gave Stew a lifetime of friendships and memories.

Having a strong work ethic, Stew was always happy to talk about his early days as a founding employee at the Bricklin Plant in Saint John, where he was the first ever President of the Union.  His career took him to Civic Hydro/Saint John Energy until his retirement in 2007.  He was very proud to serve the citizens of Saint John during his 30 years of service and loved his coworkers deeply.

But the things that made Stew the happiest  were his family, friends, and all of the connections he made anywhere he went.  His coffee club gang was a constant through his retirement and so was his spring travel with Valerie to the sunny weather in Myrtle Beach.  He revelled in hosting the grandkids for Papa’s famous burgers on the BBQ.

He will be missed terribly by all of us who loved him - and boy are there lots of us. The outpouring of love we’ve received the last 2 weeks will never be forgotten.

Arrangements are under the care of Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3 506-634-1701. As per Stewart’s wishes, there will be a private family interment and an open house at the family home in Grand Bay Westfield on April 19 from 2-6.  Please join us that afternoon with a funny memory and a smile.

Donations can be made in Stewart’s memory to your favourite charity.
