Martha and I watched the video of the celebration service for Ian tonight. There were tears shed for the man who had been part of our lives. I had not met Ken Grant but see how his childhood time with Ian and Ham Radio could have influenced their bond. Ian and I were CFRC radio alumni with many Lino’s pizzas under our belts and with me following him as Chief Engineer. I did meet Ian’s parents several times and got to enjoy his mom’s spareribs, which were an order of magnitude better than what I had experienced at my childhood home. Before you, Ian visited our cottage many times and we often played backgammon at the Inn on the Park. He and fellow CFRC alumnus Jim Freeze let me sleep on their apartment floor when I first arrived in Toronto after graduation from Electrical Engineering. Ian and I both moved into the High Park area after that.
The only time I recall meeting Merideth was when she hosted Ian’s 50th birthday. What a great time I had and there were so many other of his friends to meet!
In our final conversation in the fall a couple of years ago, we commiserated about our times together and our shared passion of electronics. Me with a collection of antique radios that got refurbished over COVID and him with Ham radio and connections around the world.
While the distance from Quispamsis may have kept us physically apart, our shared history kept us together.
His memory carries on for me.

I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Ian. We had one conversation when he called me in my office at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in 2002. He inspired me to encourage young people to participate in CHSR, the local radio station at UNB, as CHSR was a convergence of people, creativity, music, programming, planning, audio processing, and radio technology. We also had a good conversation about amateur radio and in 2010 I finally obtained my first certificate of proficiency. One of my children volunteered to listen to music at CHSR before the music got aired. One of my children co-hosted a CHSR radio program, for a few months. One of my children obtained proficiencies in amateur radio. In 2024, New Brunswick's first satellite, named VIOLET, got deployed into space; VIOLET used amateur radio frequencies. It was great that Ian phoned me in 2002 as he provided an important early inspiration, Brent Petersen, VE9EX.
