Obituary of Alexander Bruce Ross
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander “Sandy” Bruce Ross on May 19, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital in New Brunswick after a short illness. Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Alexander and Veronica “Ronnie” (Brooks) Ross. Sandy is survived by his daughter Maddison O’Quinn (Maggie) of Boston, his sister Valerie and her husband Mark Childerhose, and their sons Iain (Klara) and Andrew (Vanessa) and their child Wren.
Sandy spent his formative years in Halifax and later attended the University of King’s College where he graduated with an honours degree in history. Subsequently, he obtained an MBA from Dalhousie University launching him into a long career in the corporate world. He worked both in Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean with his last position as CEO of the Saint John Airport. He loved every facet of this last position working on projects and details until the very end. He was fortunate to have made many friends in the Saint John area evidenced by the show of support with visits and calls during those last days.
Sandy loved his family and reminisced often about the fun of raising Maddison and teasing his nephews. He also liked nothing better than a night with friends socializing and debating politics. He also loved travelling and hiking and did this with like-minded friends over the years. His other passion for those who knew him was the Toronto Maple Leaf’s. He spent his last night watching the game with his nephews and brother-in-law. It certainly wasn’t the outcome he hoped for. He will be remembered for his humor, wit, and generosity to anyone who had the pleasure to know him.
He's also survived by a strong group of friends and the family is appreciative of their support, especially Nora Lacey who was there until the very end. In addition, he is survived by his aunt, Alice McLanders, his uncle Wayne (Barb) Ross, and many cousins scattered across the country.
The family would like to thank the physicians and staff of the Saint John Regional Hospital departments of Oncology, Urology, and Palliative Care for their professionalism, care, and empathy. Special thanks to the nurses on both units who cared for him to the very end. Your kindness and care will not be forgotten.
His care has been entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B.. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.
The last words that accompanied him were the lyrics from one his favourite albums which Iain sent to him as a final tribute.
“On the nineteenth day of a spring day in May…and as soon as the battle was over I was born in victorious clover”
Rest in peace Sandy knowing you were well loved.
