Obituary of Edna Irene Thorne

With heartfelt gratitude and heavy hearts, we share the peaceful passing of Edna Irene Thorne, a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister whose life was a beautiful testament to love, family and faith.

Born on May 13, 1953, Edna poured her heart into raising her two cherished daughters, Terri and Andrea. Her love for them was deep and unconditional, and she dedicated herself to instilling within them a strong sense of family and a vibrant faith in Jesus.

Edna was a beloved daughter of Sarah and Rayfield Thorne, and a treasured sister. She shared a bond with her siblings that was filled with warmth, love, and countless memories, while navigating life’s joys and challenges together.

Predeceased by her brothers Gary (Florrie), Winston, Charles, Richard “Dick” Thorne, and Harry Reid (Ilene), along with her sister Doreen Branton (Clayton), she leaves behind her loving sisters; Pheobe Thorne (Eric), Dorothy Ridgeley (Charles), Louise Parsons (Tom), and Julie Locke (Martin), her brothers; Garfield Reid (Verly), and Ridge Thorne (Marjorie). With over 40 nieces and nephews, Edna gifted her family with laughter, love, and heartfelt prayers. Edna will be remembered as a beloved aunt and confidante. Above all, Edna will be profoundly missed by her daughters, Terri Roberts (Craig), and Andrea Reid (Adam). The strength and beauty of their mother-daughter relationships reflects the remarkable woman who raised them – one who embodied resilience and strength.

In 2008, Edna made the brave decision to relocate to New Brunswick to be closer to her daughter Terri and son-in-law Craig, joyfully following the blessing of her first grandchild Gwen Roberts. Leaving Newfoundland was a significant transition, yet Edna’s unwavering commitment to her family remained her guiding light.  As a devoted mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, she nurtured their faith, teaching them about the boundless love of Jesus and praying daily for her precious grandchildren, Gwen and Meg Roberts, and Kyle and Chloe Reid.

Described by many as a ‘mouse with slippers’, Edna’s gentle spirit radiated warmth and compassion, making everyone around her feel cherished and valued. Yet, she was steadfast in her family values, never compromising on what mattered most. Her final days were filled with love, laughter, and the presence of her dearest loved ones, creating lasting memories that will live on in their hearts. Edna’s time on earth was truly meaningful, marked by her unfaltering faith and devotion to Jesus. Her legacy is one of hope, love, and a promise of eternal life, embodying her belief that ‘to be absent in the body is present with the Lord’. She always sought to share her faith, reminding us that Jesus is the light that guides our lives.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Edna’s honor to her beloved hometown church, Faith United Church in Thornlea, Newfoundland, or to the Outflow Shelter in Saint John, New Brunswick. As we celebrate the life of this remarkable woman, Edna’s spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of our hearts. Rest peacefully, dear Edna, knowing that your legacy of love and faith will shine brightly through your family and friends.
