Obituary of David Menzie McCavour
With saddened hearts the family of David McCavour announce his death which took place on June 24, 2025. He died surrounded by his family at Shannex, Saint John. Born in Saint John on January 13th, 1937, he was the son of the late Cecil and Elsie (Green) McCavour and lived in Lorneville all his life until he moved to the long-term care home in 2020. He married his childhood sweetheart the late Rhena (Maguire) McCavour in April 1961. They were married for 54 years at the time of her death in 2015. His life and happiness revolved around his wife and family.
He started a thriving business as a fisherman in the Bay of Fundy where he fished salmon, groundfish, lobster and scallop for over 50 years until his health declined. He also volunteered as a member of the Canadian Marine Rescue Auxiliary Coastguard and was responsible for saving many people over the years. He loved being on the water but not in it! He and Rhena were happiest when they were surrounded by family and friends, especially their grandchildren. They loved hosting and spending time on their boat called the “Rhena and I.” There are many wonderful videos and pictures of the enjoyment they had spending the summers on the beautiful Saint John River. In his younger years, he loved hunting and would guide in his spare time. Known for his strength of character, intelligence, and witty dry sense of humour, he was also known as a generous and loving father and grandfather who will be missed by all.
He is survived by sons; Kenneth McCavour (Karen) of Lorneville, James McCavour (Candice) of Musquash, daughter Cindy McCavour (Ed Healy) of Ottawa, brother Philip McCavour (Judith) of Saint John, sister Jane (McCavour) Ruga of New Jersey, USA and grandchildren Zachery, JamieLynn, Cecil, Alexandra, and Bronson. Great-grandchildren Sloan, Penelope, Ivy, Theodore, Rhena, Isla (on her way) and beloved sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his wife Rhena (Maguire) McCavour and brother Enos Cecil McCavour (Patricia).
Resting at the Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John with visitation on Sunday June 29th from 6:00-8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 30th at Castle Funeral Home. After the funeral, the burial will take place at the Lorneville Cemetery.
A special thank you to Carol Segec who was his caregiver and friend for over 10 years. Her care, love, and devotion to him was above and beyond. Carol has become a much loved member of our family. Sincere appreciation to the staff of Shannex, Tucker Hall for the exceptional care and respect David received. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lorneville Cemetery or Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
