Margaret Briggs, wife of the late Gordon Briggs, passed away on December 1, 2013 at her residence. Born in Saint John on November 24, 1930, she was the eldest daughter of Myrtle (Conley) and the late Fred Watts. Margaret spent most of her working life at the right hand of her father at the Fred J. Watts Home Hardware Store. She was a past member of UCW of Portland United Church, past member of the handbell choir at St. Mark’s United Church, member of Westfield United Church, and past Grand Organist of the Order of the Eastern Star. Travelling and being by the water were two of her many passions. Margaret (or Betty as she was also known) was most happy when surrounded by her friends and family. Besides her mother, she is survived by her son, Richard McAlary (Ruth Brown) of Brisbane, Australia; daughters: Sandra Lacer (Bill) of Fort Worth, Texas; Kathy McLaughlin (John) and Marilyn Parish (Rudy), all of Woodman’s Point, NB; grandchildren: Peter, Michael, Jason, Sarah, Billy, Sarah, Laura, Mackie, Sandy, and Natalie; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Doreen White (Murray), and Jean Flewelling; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Besides her father and husband, she was predeceased by her son, Keith Briggs. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, 634-7425, visiting will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:00 am from Westfield United Church, with a reception following immediately after. Private interment will take place at a later time in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Westfield United Church Piano Fund would be appreciated by the family.
