Obituary of Albert Main Colwell

With sadness, the family of Abbie Colwell, beloved husband of Evelyn C. (Heinze) Colwell, announce his passing on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. Born February 12, 1928 in Saint John, he was a son of the late Clarence and Annie (Whipple) Colwell. Abbie was well known for his involvement in local sports and was one of the founders of South End Little League and minor football in Saint John. He played hockey with the Saint John Beavers and baseball with the St. Peter’s Saints, and coached four generations in baseball, hockey, and football. His participation lead to his induction into the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame. He also received the Golden Jubilee Medal, which is awarded to Canadians who have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their community. In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Abbie will be sorely missed by his children: Charlotte Hale of Burlington, ON, Betsy Colwell-Burley (Tom) of Fall River, NS, John Colwell of Sussex, and Nancy Colwell (Susan McKay) of Waverley, NS; grandchildren: Brandon Hale, Clark Colwell (Isabelle), Abby Lee Northrup (Steve), Cali Colwell-McKay, and Tyler Colwell-McKay; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers and sisters. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to a special friend of theirs, Doris Morrison, for being so supportive. Your kindness will not be forgotten. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John (634-7425). At the family’s request, there will be no funeral service, however friends and family are invited to a time of visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 from 2 to 7 pm. Due to unforseen circumstances, not all family members will be able to attend visiting hours, however, there will be a special family celebration of Abbie’s life in the spring. For those who wish, remembrances to the Alzheimer Society of NB, the Red Cross, Bobby’s Hospice, or P.R.O. Kids would be appreciated by the family.
