Obituary of Joseph Walter Maher

It is with great sadness, the family of Walter Maher announce his passing, January 13, 2005 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born in Sussex, New Brunswick, July 24, 1923 to Joseph and Margaret (Whitters) Maher. Walter is survived by his wife Lois (Hannah, McAdam) Maher. Devoted Dad to daughters Bonnie Hayes (Terry and Amy), Susan Maher, Judy Murray (Debbie), Betty Bushe (Bill, Iain and Andrew) and son, Gerry Maher (Barb, Jennifer, Crystal and Matthew). Walter is also survived by a brother, Arthur Maher and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Audrey Johnson, dear sister Bernice Doyle and brother Donald. He will be greatly missed by many friends in Saint John and Largo, Florida where he and Lois have enjoyed the past fourteen winters. Educated in Saint John, Walter was a Leading Aircraftman with the RCAF during World War II. After the war he was employed with New System Laundry and General Bakeries in Saint John before beginning a long and successful career in the Life Insurance Industry. In 1983 Walter retired from Prudential Insurance of America after 32 years of service. Not one to stay idle, Walter became an independent insurance agent and continued to work part-time until 2003. Walter enjoyed spending time with his family, his favorite sport ? baseball, his garden and of course the horses. He will always be remembered for his quick mind, gentle wit, thoughtful soul and loving heart. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), with visiting Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 17, 2005, at 11:00 AM, from Brenan's Chapel. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery. In memory of Walter donations to Hospice of Saint John and Sussex, for the development of New Brunswick's first Hospice House or Ridgewood Veterans Wing “Comfort Fund” would be greatly appreciated by the family. We wish to thank all of the exceptional people at Ridgewood Veteran's Wing who were so kind and took such wonderful care of Dad.
