Obituary of Gordon Hutson Myles

With heavy hearts the family of Gordon Hutson (Gunner) Myles announces his passing, surrounded by his loving children, on August 13, 2018 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, NB. Gordon is survived by his six children, Wayne Myles (Joan) of St. John’s, NL and Grande-Digue, NB, Bette Theriault (Stan Basque) of Saint John, NB, Barb Baldwin (Jeff) of Kingston, NB, Hutson Myles (Diana) of Halifax, NS, Janet Keusch (Cornel) of Alexandria, ON, Maureen Gravel (Rob) of Ottawa, ON and stepson, Anthony McCready (Shanti) of ON and his sisters, Bette Scott (Ron) of Quispamsis, NB and Grace Seymour of Saint John, NB. Grampy will be dearly missed by his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife Karen, his daughter Carol, his son Archie, his parents and his older brother and sister. Gordon was born in Saint John, NB, the son of the late Robert Hutson Myles and Ida Grace Fillmore in 1935. At the age of 15, Gordon very bravely forged his parents’ signature to enlist in the Canadian Army for service in the Korean War. He celebrated his 16th birthday on the ship across the ocean. After several years Gunner Myles returned home with several medals and commendations. On the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War he was presented with the Ambassador for Peace Medal by the Korean Ambassador. Gordon’s career started very humbly as a southern NB milkman and breadman. His many careers saw him involved in investment product and car sales, residential construction, wholesale building materials, finance, heavy equipment sales, road building and airline marketing. He was also a strategic business advisor to numerous business colleagues and good friends. Gordon was a consummate negotiator, with extraordinary people skills and an entertaining story teller (some of his stories were actually true). He was passionate about supporting charities such as the Children’s Wish Foundation through the Short Fat Guys 1 Mile Downhill Run. Gordon enjoyed and was active in hockey in New Brunswick. He was an outspoken GM of the Saint John Moosehead’s senior hockey team in the 1960’s and involved with the Saint John Moosehead’s oldtimers hockey team. Years of travelling and trips to the horse races and spending time with his family and friends brought him enjoyment. Gordie’s favourite past time was tipping a glass with his friends in Gordon’s Corner at Grannan’s Bar. The family is especially grateful to the amazing staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing where he spent the final 6 years of life. For him and for us, they were like extended family. In May 2018 his family and many dear friends gathered at Grannan’s restaurant to CELEBRATE LIFE with Gordie (known to some as "Huts"). Wonderful stories of love and admiration were shared. In keeping with his wishes there will be no formal funeral service or visitation. If you wish to remember Gordon, donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation, Saint John Association for Community Living (in memory of his son Archie) or a charity of choice would be truly appreciated.
