Obituary of Joyce Esther Mayo

Mayo, Joyce Esther, at Grand Manan Hospital, August 8, 2009, following a period of declining health. Joyce Mayo of Fort Howe Apartments, was born in Saint John on January 23, 1922, to William and Hallie Mayo, the second of eight children. The Mayo’s later moved from the (Lancaster) West Side, to Renforth, where Joyce attended, and graduated from, Rothesay Consolidated School and Saint John High School. She attended Provincial Normal School and later, MacDonald College, at McGill University, in Montreal, graduating with a degree in Home Economics. Her teaching career was long and varied. Joyce taught in several one-room schools in Upham, Sussex Corner and Rothesay, as well as, Princess Elizabeth, New Albert and Millidgeville North schools, in Saint John. She retired in the early 1980’s. She was a charter member and past president of the Marco Polo Quilters. Her talent as a seamstress and quilter were well known and she won prizes at local Saint John Quilt fairs. Joyce attended the Church of St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement, in Millidgeville, after the closing of St. Paul’s in the Valley. She was a member of the Saint John Dietetics Association, former executive member of the Saint John Home Economics Association and the Saint John Teachers Credit Union, St. Paul’s Needlework Society, St. Paul’s Quilters and St. Clement’s Ladies. Joyce was predeceased by her brothers Brian, Medley and Bernard Mayo and is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Bass and brothers Mark (Joan), John and Gerald Mayo, along with many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, Tuesday, August 11, 2-4 pm and evening 7-9pm. Funeral Service to be held at St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement Anglican Church, in Millidgeville, on August 12 at 2 pm, Reverend Canon. Alvin Westgate officiating. Internment following, at Fernhill Cemetary. Donations may be made to the Saint John School Milk Fund or any charity of the donor’s choice. www.brenansfh.com
