Obituary of Hilda Pauline Holyoke

Holyoke, Hilda Pauline - The death of Hilda Pauline Holyoke (Shuve), wife of the late Donald Ralph Holyoke, occurred on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Church of Saint John and St. Stephen Home. Born in Saint John on December 19, 1919, daughter of the late John and Margaret (Moore) Shuve, she is survived by her children, Margaret Anne Holburn (Michael Hellingwerf) of Saint John, Carolyn Susan Holyoke of Ottawa, Ontario, and currently assigned to the Canadian Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Wm. Ralph (Karen) Holyoke of Saint John; grandchildren Jennifer and Scott Holburn; three bothers, Alfred (Ruby) Shuve of Saint John, Ainslie Shuve of Toronto, Ontario and Edward "Ted" (Peggy) Shuve of Saint John; several nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by sisters, Evelyn Kyle, Anna Shuve, Jean Cooke, Kathleen Buckland; brothers, Walter and John (Jack) Shuve. Hilda spent a good part of her adult life living on the Kennebecasis River where she raised her family and was an avid enthusiast of the river and the wildlife in the surrounding area while at the same time providing the neighborhood children with the best cookies and sugar doughnuts ever made. She was a strong woman who was admired by her children for her ability to tackle whatever task came her way whether it be upholstering her favorite rocking chair or shoveling snow in the early hours of the morning so that the kids could get to the school bus on time. Hilda also spent very precious time being 'Nana' to Jennifer and Scott. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424 with visiting on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery where her ashes will be united with those of her late husband Don. Remembrances made to the Church of Saint John and St. Stephen Home or charity of donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. www.brenansfh.com
