Obituary of Edith E. Higgins

Following a period of failing health, the death of Edith Higgins, wife of the late Hensley M. Higgins occurred at Bobby’s Hospice on Friday, October 28, 2011. A daughter of the late William E. and Pearl E. (Smith) McLellan she was born on January 12, 1932 at Summerside, PEI. The family moved to Saint John, NB in June of 1964, where Edie worked for Neilson Clearing House and Clearview Home Furnishings for many years as a bookkeeper. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother; playing a major role in her grandchildren’s lives. Edie touched many people with her kindness and thoughtfulness; loving life, laughing and always having a sparkle in her eye. She loved to travel especially back to PEI to visit her family and travelled to the British Isles. Edie was known for her baking especially her bread and she also enjoyed gardening having gorgeous flower and bountiful vegetable gardens. Edie is survived by her children: Allan (Cora) of Rothesay, NB and Ellen Higgins (Fidel Acosta) of Pennfield, NB; grandchildren: Matthew (Sherry) and Katherine Higgins; brothers: Ira and Ivan (Zelda); sisters: Ruth Forth, Mary Auld (Edison) and Helen MacLean (Malcolm) and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband of 59 years, Hensley, Edie was predeceased by sister, Marion Bearisto and brothers: William and Everett. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Chris O’Brien, staff and volunteers of Bobby’s Hospice whose compassion and expertise restored Edie’s quality of life and dignity in her final days. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) with visiting on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
