Obituary of Mohan O. Iype

The death of Dr. Mohan O. Iype occurred on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at his home in Quispamsis, NB. He is survived by his wife Dr. Pramila (Pam) Iype, his partner for over 40 years; his two children Mark (Marie) of Rothesay, his daughter Nalini of Toronto who were the beacons that lighted his way; his Grandson Elias; his mother Mary Iype of Bangalore, India; brothers Dr. Cherian Iype (Gayle) of Leeds, UK, John Iype (Mariam) of Bangalore, India and sister Valsa Thomas (George) of Bangalore, India. He was predeceased by his father V.O. Iype. Dr. Mohan Iype was born in India, on November 10, 1942. He graduated from Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore University, in 1967. He immigrated to Canada in 1968 and did his Internship at the Saint John General Hospital. He then went on to the University of Ottawa to do his General Surgery Residency and then to the University of Toronto to do his Fellowship in Vascular Surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He practised General and Vascular Surgery at the Saint John Regional Hospital from July 1975. In 1982, he went on a Sabbatical to the University of Leicester in the UK to do a Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery. He was Chief of Staff of the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation from 1992 to 2000. Dr. Iype was a Professor of Surgery at Dalhousie University and Memorial University. In 2001, his Department honoured him with the institution of "The M.O. Iype Annual Lecture". Dr. Iype was President of the Saint John Medical Society in 1986 and President of the Medical Staff of the Saint John Regional Hospital in 1989. He was Chairman of the Physicians Education Committee of the New Brunswick Medical Society and served on the Board. He was co-chairman of the scientific session of the Canadian Medical Association and served on the Council of Medical Education. Dr. Iype was the Vice President for Fellowship Affairs of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, served on its Council from 1992 and was an Examiner for the Royal College. Dr. Iype, most recently was the Assistant Dean for Medical Education for New Brunswick, for Dalhousie University and Memorial University and the Coordinator of Medical Education (Anglophone) in NB, resigning his position on June 30, 2006. Dr. Iype was honoured by the University of New Brunswick, by awarding him a Doctor of Science degree in 2000. Dr. Iype has had an interest in medical education and the delivery of health care for over thirty years, and was given the inaugural award, of the New Brunswick Medical Society, for excellence in Education and Research and Humanitarian Service, in 2006. He was honoured by the Province of New Brunswick by bestowing upon him the Order of New Brunswick in 2007. Faith in his creator is very important to Dr. Iype. "To whom that has been given much, of him much is expected" has been the guiding philosophy of his life. He was Vice-President of the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Fredericton. He occasionally worked as a Duty Chaplain at the Saint John Regional Hospital and as a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church of Canada. The funeral service will be held from St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Rothesay, NB on Saturday February 18, 2012 at 2:00 PM, with a reception to follow in the church hall.
