Obituary of Doreene Gladys Hughes

The death of Doreene Gladys Hughes, wife of the late Ronald Murray Hughes, occurred on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Born in Saint John on July 6, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Wendell and Mae (Sutter) MacNutt. Doreene was an avid gardener and known as the flower lady of Kennebecasis Drive, where her extensive flowers and gardens were the backgrounds for many wedding pictures over the years. She called her gardening a labour of love as most of her later days were spent on her passion of growing her flower beds which led her to be involved in the Community in Bloom in Saint John, winning the Mayor’s Award in 2003 for her community involvement. She volunteered with the handicapped, Junior Auxiliary, and Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. Doreene had won many awards for her needle point and cross stitch pictures in earlier years. She was an at home Mom, raising her children and many four-legged furry friends that she adored. Doreene is survived daughters, Sandra of Dartmouth, NS, and Dianne (Lane) of Quispamsis; son David of Saint John; grandchildren Kathryn "Katie" and Michael of Dartmouth, NS; a brother, Murray "Bud" MacNutt of the Turnbull Nursing Home; and several nieces and nephews. By Doreene’s request, there will be no visitation. A private family service and interment will take place at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances to the SPCA Animal Rescue, the Cherry Brook Zoo, or to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
