Obituary of Walter Stanley Patchell

Walter Stanley Patchell of Saint John, husband of the late Angeline “Ann” Helene (Gray) Patchell, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Ridgewood Veteran’s Centre. Born at Saint John on April 3, 1913, Walter was a Veteran of World War II, serving overseas with the 4th Division Signal Corps. He was one of the first full time Safety Officers of the City of Saint John, a position he held for more than 32 years, retiring in 1978. Walter also helped his wife Ann with Patchie and Pal Daycare, which they operated for many years. Active in the community, Walter was a Past President of the Glen Falls Gems Seniors Club, a Past President of the Loyalists Seniors Zone, a Past President and Member of the Board of Directors of the New Brunswick Senior Citizens’ Federation, a Past President of the Seniors’ Activity Centre, as well as a Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge. In his spare time, Walter enjoyed woodworking, was a model train enthusiast, and enjoyed spending time with his family. Walter is survived by a step son, LeBaron “Sonny” Irwin (Joy) of Rothesay; a step daughter, Betty Adair (Douglas) of Sussex; step grandchildren Bradley Irwin (Miriam) of Ottawa, ON, Terrie Reicker (Ron) of Saint John, and Sandra Toner (Kirk) of Saint John; six great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. Walter was predeceased by a step granddaughter, Kimberley Anne Irwin, and a step grandson, Lawrence Adair. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday from 2-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 12:00 Noon. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to any charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. A Tribute to a Veteran Service will be held on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
