Obituary of George Nelson Keeling

George Keeling passed away on March 8th, 2011 at the age of 91 years young. He was predeceased by his wife Martha Reid Keeling (nee Allaby). George was the last surviving sibling of his family, he was predeceased by his brother Ernest Keeling, his sister Marjorie Longmire, brother Donnie Speight, sister Betty Clements, and Fran Clayton. He is survived by his daughter Faye (Ernie King), sons Melvin (Shelley), Douglas (Dalyce) and Gary (Mia) and special friend Bea Conley. Grandchildren Susan Breen, Cindy, Greg and Tony King; Chris, Cathy, Elissa, Alexis, Kaley, Christie, Melissa, Candace, and Skylar Keeling, several great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Started work at age 15—due to death of father to support mother and siblings Veteran of WW II enlisted with Carlton York Regiment, survived the London Blitz, was a military police who taught and drove motorcycle. One of his proudest moments while on convoy duty was having the opportunity to shake hands with the Queen Mother. Loyal member of Royal Canadian Legion and was Service Officer for several years helping retired vets Was councilor in the Town of Marysville in the early 1960’s Was on the Board of Directors of the Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton advocating for improved patient care. Had the highest sales for Ganong’s Ltd for 35 years and finished as supervisor of the sales force at age 67 and was a life-time member of the United Commercial Travelers As a curler he experienced the dream "eight-ender" and later became a very successful skip at the Fredericton Curling Club Was a member of the Board of the Canadian Track and Field Association at the controversial time that China was first recognized by the International Olympic Committee Often stated he worked for 3 great New Brunswick families— the Ganong’s of St Stephen, the Lane’s of Moncton and the Irving’s of Saint John To his children and grandchildren and employers he was always dependable and a winner—when "gramp" walked into a room he "lit it up" with his outgoing personality, red face and a smile. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424 with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 11:00 am from St. David’s United Church, Rothesay, NB. A Royal Canadian Legion Service will be held on Sunday at 7:00 pm. For those who wish remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, New Brunswick Lung Association or any charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
