Obituary of Stewart Maurice Smith

The unexpected death of Stewart Smith occurred on Monday, July 8, 2013 at Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born on October 14, 1925 in Saint John to the late Mayes and Lillian (Vincent) Smith. Stewart had long and successful career; working as office manager at SMT for 18 years and becoming the expropriation officer for Lorneville during the building of Coleson Cove and retiring as an employment standards officer with the NB Department of Labour. Stewart had a passion for music; singing at weddings, funerals and in various choirs. He was a volunteer at the North End Food Bank, Head of the Portland United Christmas Meal Program, was on the Board of the Canadian Mental Health Association and was an avid supporter of the Sophia Recovery Centre. Stewart enjoyed spending time at the "camp" at Bedford Wharf in Holderville; he loved the river and sailing. Stewart was a selfless man, always putting others first. He loved all his family just as they are. He is survived by his sons: Craig (Janet) of Salisbury and David of Victoria, BC; daughter, Brenda Smith (Joanne Jennings) of Rothesay; sister, Olive Bryden (Fred) of Douglas Harbour; brother, Roy Thompson (Lois) of Moncton; grandchildren: Adam Smith, Adam Sanchez, Vanessa Sanchez, Melissa Smith, and Michael Smith; step-children: Gary, Linda, Sherie, and Debbie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; former wife, Frances Frazee (Johnson); second wife, Grace Smith (Walsh); brothers: Arnold, Lloyd and Ron; sister, Florence and step-daughter, Heather. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 12:00 noon. For those who wish remembrances to Sophia Recovery Centre or Down’s Syndrome Society (Moncton) would be appreciated by the family.
