Obituary of Darrell S. Moore

Darrell Sheridan Moore, born June 3rd, 1918, passed peacefully on February 11, 2013 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was the son of Ellen (MacAndrew) and Philip Moore. Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Gladys (Cooper) Moore; two sons John Moore (Sylvia Comuzzi) of Fredericton, Paul Moore (Anne Gormley) of Rothesay; grandchildren Jessica Moore (Ryan O’Neill) of Quispamsis, Ashley Moore and Jonathan Moore of Rothesay; great granddaughter Georgia O’Neill of Quispamsis. Darrell is predeceased by his sister Gloria Swetnam; brother Lloyd Webster Moore; sister in-law Doreen Brueton; brother-in-law Fred Brueton; and nephew David Moore. He graduated from Saint John High School and the International Correspondence School of Accounting. He served overseas as a Navigator and Instructor in the R.C.A.F. in WWII and continued his service as an Instructor in Comox, B.C. Darrell started working as an accountant at Johnson and Ward Stock Brokers, but spent the majority of his career (34 years) as an Accountant and Personnel Manager for Irving Oil Limited, Saint John. Having a passion for sailing and boat building, Darrell enjoyed both local and ocean racing and built over 30 wooden boats in his garage. The last boat he constructed was a 30 foot Olympic class Dragon. He was an active member of the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club throughout his life and was regularly seen racing and cruising his boat "Gypsy" with family and friends. Darrell’s other interests were woodworking and furniture making. He taught himself the art of furniture making and built many pieces for family, friends and church fundraisers. His work was always stamped "Made by Darrell Moore" and his work can be found throughout the province. During his early years Darrell attended St. George’s Anglican Church. Following his marriage he became a member of St. Andrew’s Kirk (Church of St Andrew and St David) and served as an Elder and Treasurer for many years. He was also an active member of the Saint John Y’s Men’s Club. Other surviving family members include brother in-law S. Clinton Cooper (Evelyn) of Saint John; sister-in-law Joyce Mundee; nieces and nephews Jane Brueton (Thomas) of Winnipeg; Diane Brueton (Craig) of Winnipeg; Ronald Copper (Sherry) of Saint John; Sandra Cooper (Kenneth) of Doaktown; Karen Smith (Michael) Chester Basin, N.S.; Donald Moore (Donna), Brian Swetnam and James Swetnam of Saint John, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visitation on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held Thursday at 7 pm during visitation. The Funeral Service will be held from the Church of St. Andrew and St. David, 164 Germain Street on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Church of St. Andrew and St. David or the chairty of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
