Obituary of Janet Davidson Docherty

After various illnesses patiently borne with great dignity Janet passed away peacefully on Tuesday 16th May at Saint John Regional Hospital. Janet is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years Bernie, her two sons Lindsay (Andrea) of Vancouver, Washington, and Craig (Carla) Edmonton Alberta, her grandchildren, Megan, Stephen, Alistair and Keira, great-grandson Jack, her sister Kathleen and Niece Lesley. The family cannot express the sorrow that they feel at this time. Janet was a well-loved member of the Saint John community. Her kindness and goodness to family, friends and strangers is renowned. Nothing was a problem for Janet where helping anyone was concerned. Janet was a member of St. Matthew’s and later of Grace Presbyterian churches where she held positions of Envelope Secretary and was on the Board of Trustees at both of her churches. She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister and Aunt. She 'adopted' many extra "Family" along the way and all were safe in the knowledge that Janet would always be there for them, gently guiding them along life's path. Janet had the ability to share her optimism, creativity and gentle kindness helping those around her to chase many worries away and lead them to serenity. She was a one-of-a-kind treasure and her smile could light up your heart. Janet was unaware of how wonderful she was and how her sound advice helped so many. She will be remembered for all the acts of selflessness and genuine caring to make others happy and raise their spirits. Janet's working career started in her native Scotland where she was secretary to the Medical Officer of Health. She moved to Canada in 1974 where she was employed in many different roles from fork lift driver to being an insulator at the local refinery. There were a few more ladylike positions after. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). To help celebrate this amazing lady's life, Bernie invites family and friends to join him at a Memorial Service on Saturday 20th May at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, 101 Coburg Street. Janet and Bernie's good friend, The Rev Dr John Crawford will conduct the service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Family flowers only.
