Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Fisher

We are saddened to announce the death of Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Fisher which occurred on Sunday, October 9th, at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born in Fairview, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth "Tilly" (McDevitt) Williston. Following her graduation from St. Vincent’s High School, Betty began a teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Hanford Brook. After attending business college, she worked for Dr. Skinner and then as a stenographer in the operating room at Saint John General Hospital. Not long after her marriage, she devoted herself to the career of wife and mother. Years later, when her husband purchased a local business, Betty re-entered the workplace as bookkeeper and office manager. After their retirement, Betty was able to enjoy spending much more time at their cottage on the Belleisle. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Joseph Fisher and three brothers, Richard "Dick", Charles, and John "Jack" Williston. Surviving are her daughter, Susan (Peter) Little, Quispamsis; her son, Dr. Robert (Nancy) Fisher, Saint John; her grandchildren, Jeff Woodland, Ottawa, Ryan Woodland, French Village, Heather (Corey) MacMichael, Quispamsis, Benjamin and Megan Fisher, Saint John; great-grand children Aryaunna Woodland-Wright, Alberta, Avery, Miley, Rhys and Logan MacMichael, Quispamsis, Jayden and Chanel Woodland, French Village, her sister Margaret "Peggy" Durning, Saint John; eleven nieces and ten nephews. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visitation on Monday, October 17th, 2016 from 6 to 9 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X Church, 316 Somerset Street on Tuesday, October 18th, 2016 at 11am. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances in Betty’s memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. www.brenansfh.com.
