Obituary of Hazel Mae Fleming

With great sadness our family announces the passing of Hazel Fleming of Saint John, beloved wife of the late Joseph Fleming, on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Carleton Kirk Lodge. Born on December 4, 1925, she was the daughter of Harold and Elizabeth Graves (McAuley) of Norton. As the daughter of a CNR station master, Mother’s family moved throughout NB before settling in Norton. She grew up quickly, having to help her family after Harold’s untimely death. Mother then found a career in accounting and payroll at NBTel and was active in drama and, in particular softball - which is how she met a young ball player named Joe. Settling in Saint John, Mother became a lifetime member of the U.C.W. at Portland United, SJRH Auxiliary and Carleton Kirk United Church. She was known for her creative abilities, beautiful knitting, gorgeous quilts and (world famous) ginger snaps - things she would spend hours making to help various charities or folks going through a rough time. Mother enjoyed travelling and summers spent in Sussex at the Town and Country, she loved sports and fondly recalled skating into her late 70’s. Even in her late 80’s, she tended her beautiful garden in Fundy Heights overlooking the bay, ever matching wits with her friends - the deer, ground hogs and seagulls. Most of all, we remember Mother lovingly for her selflessness, toward her nieces and nephews and in her support of her children’s and grandchildren’s education. Mother is sadly missed by her children Jim (Kim) Fleming and JoAnne (Jim) Murray, grandchildren Jesse Murray, Lindsay and Brian Fleming, sister Joyce Griffiths, and very special nieces and nephews, all of whom she thought the world of - and did so much for. A celebration reception of Hazel’s life will be held at Carleton Kirk Lodge, Saturday, May 13, 2-4 pm. Our family would be honored if Mother’s friends and relatives would come and enjoy a cup of tea, some ginger snaps and share their memories of her. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Memorial contributions can be made to the Carleton Kirk Lodge.
