Obituary of Grace Catherine Dryden

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Grace Catherine Dryden (nee Downey) at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Grace was the last surviving sibling of Daniel and Kathleen (Dunn) Downey. Gone before her are her sisters, Bea Record, Connie DeMatteo, Hortense Hanley and brothers, Joseph and Clem. Grace was also predeceased by her loving husband, George M. Dryden. Together George and Grace had four children, Kathy, Peggy (Nirmal), Bob (Beth Gaines), and Dan (Christine Edwards). Grace had three grandchildren, Angela (Jim Bates), Justin (Jennifer Stewart), and Meg. Mom’s life was all about family, a good game of cards with her sisters, nieces and nephews, was a great way to spend time. She loved to bake and always had fresh pies and cookies ready to treat anyone who dropped in for a visit. Music, singing and playing her harmonica would put a smile on her face. Mom’s faith in God was strong and unwavering and it saw her through tough times and gave her peace in the end. A special thank you to the staff of Sea Street Manor for their excellent care of Mom over the last several years; the Saint John Regional Hospital staff of 3D South, for their compassion and care of Mom; Christine Dryden, you were Mom’s rock, you loved her and were always available for her; Dianne Garland for keeping God and the church very present in Mom’s life; Gloria Moore (Record) always willing, ready and able to take on card games, birthday parties and middle of the night visit to hold hands; Mary Quinn who always helped us when we needed. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday, May 8, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the St. Pius X Church, 316 Somerset Street, Saint John on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
