Obituary of Florence May Cosman

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Florence May Cosman (née McCullum), loving wife of J.W. "Wes" Cosman, announces her passing, which occurred on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in North Clones, New Brunswick on July 24, 1933, and raised in Hoyt, NB, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Edith E. (Elder) McCullum. Florence was a kind, compassionate woman who took pride in her church and community. She began her career as a teacher at Welsford School and later became principal at Ketepec School . When she and Wes started their family, Florence became a devoted mother and homemaker for Wes and their three children. Her cooking, knitting and sewing skills served her well. Florence’s kitchen in Morna Heights hosted holiday meals, family celebrations and neighborhood parties for the last 56 years. She was a member of the church choir, past president of the Altar Guild, past Synod delegate, and past member of the Ladies Aid, in addition to pitching in at most church functions for over 60 years. She was appointed church historian at St. Anne’s Anglican Church in Ketepec prior to its closing and joining the Church of the Resurrection. She was a member of UCT, and thoroughly enjoyed travelling with Wes and making lifelong friends across Canada and the US with that group. She was a former member of Westfield Golf and Country Club; played in a bridge club of special friends; loved to read and research genealogy. Florence and Wes loved to dance to the big band sound and even mastered square dancing which they enjoyed with a local club for many years. Florence will be missed by Wes, her devoted husband of 60years,as well as by her children, Anthony Scott (Tony) Cosman (Mary), Terry Jayne Ricketts (Tim), and Trudy Leanne Walker (Wayne); grandchildren, Jessica and Alyson Cosman, Abigail Gaudet (Caleb), Jeremy Ricketts (Wendy), Ashley Ricketts, Mitchell and Colton Walker; two great grandchildren, Jocelyn and Dylan Ricketts as well as one great granddaughter Gaudet due in July; siblings, Grace Pugh (the late Laurence), Betty Byers (Freeman) and Ronald McCullum (Judy); one sister-in-law, Eleanor Reicker; many nieces and nephews; as well as the many people whose lives she’s touched throughout her journey. In addition to her parents and brother-in-law, Laurence, Florence was predeceased by infant brother, David McCullum and infant twin grandsons, Adam and Eric Cosman. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Elizabeth Keyes; Dr. Sean Dolan and the caring staff of the SJRH Oncology Department and to the SJRH-Palliative Care Unit. Arrangements are entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) with visitation on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Celebration of Florence’s life will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 11:00 am from Church of the Resurrection, 20 MacDonald Avenue, Grand Bay-Westfield. Interment will take place at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Church of the Resurrection, Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation or any charity of the donor’s choice.
