Obituary of Murray L. Connell

Murray L. Connell of Central Greenwich, NB, husband of Doris Connell, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2017 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing in Saint John. Born in Saint John on October 4, 1920, he was the son of the late John Henry and Carrie (Patterson) Connell. Besides his wife, he is also survived by one son, Brian Connell of Public Landing; one daughter, Judy Mosher (Dennis) of Clarendon; two grandchildren, Heather Dawn Connell and Carla Dawn Killam (Robert); three step-grandchildren, Adam, Amanda and Jeffery Kenny; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brayden, Domenic, Shaelyn and Payton; several step-children and his lifelong friend, Ray McDevitt. He was predeceased by first wife, Frances Amelia Connell; son, Murray Wayne Connell; brother, Hazen Connell and sister, Aletta Koski; daughter-in-law, F. Ann Connell and grandson, Sean Murray Connell. Mr. Connell was a World War II Veteran who participated in the D-Day landing at Juno Beach on June 6, 1944 with the 4th Canadian Armoured Division. For his part in the Liberation of France, the French government awarded him the French Legion Metal of Honour, awarding him the rank of Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour effective November 9th, 2015. Mr. Connell had the opportunity to return to France in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of D-Day with his granddaughter Heather. Then in 2005 he returned to Holland with his wife Doris for the celebration of the Liberation of Holland. Mr. Connell was a lifelong member of Legion Branch 87 Greenwich and former president. He was a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1039 at the Port of Saint John from 1953 to 1983. Mr. Connell enjoyed time spent in the woods hunting and fishing, telling stories and quality time spent with those he loved. His presence will be missed greatly. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Legion Tribute will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Brenan's Chapel on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. Remembrances to Ridgewood Veterans Wing - Comfort Fund would be appreciated by the family.
