Obituary of Brian Edward Shanks

After a period of failing health and a short hospital stay, with his wife and sister by his side, Brian passed into eternal peace on Sunday, February 12th, 2017. Brian lived life to the fullest, looked for the good in everything and everyone and leaves behind an extended, eclectic and large family of friends whose interests include but are not limited to emergency preparedness, toastmasters, ham radio, history, the military, and community involvement and volunteering. Since retiring from the Point Lepreau Nuclear Plant in 2015, Brian continued to be involved in our community with emergency preparedness with the Town of Quispamsis and his column in the community newspaper, with the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Board, and through his participation on committees with the Saint John Regional Hospital. Brian and Barb also found time for some travel and to share their love of the culinary world through dinners with friends at restaurants and in their home. Brian is survived by his wife of 32 years Barbara Kierstead-Shanks, his sister Diane (Phillip) Bloom of Saint John and his mother-in-law Shirley Kierstead of Quispamsis. Brian was predeceased by his parents Calvin and Margaret Shanks and his father-in-law Robert Kierstead. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visitation on Wednesday, February 15th from 2pm until 8pm. A Funeral Service will take place at Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, February 17th at 2 pm. Interment at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Kidney Foundation or any charity of the donor’s choice.
