Obituary of John Calvin Manning

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of John Manning of Saint John, beloved husband and friend of Catherine (Sullivan) Manning. His death occurred on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Born on February 13, 1934 in Montreal and raised in Richmond, QC, he was the son of the late Clinton and Rita (Butler) Manning. John graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, where he met Catherine. He started his working career at Touche Ross as a Chartered Accountant and retired as a valued and loyal employee of Irving Oil at the age of 75. He gave selflessly of himself to his many volunteer positions, working right up until the day he fell ill. For many years, John was a member and Treasurer of the Y’s Men. He always took great comfort in his faith and was an active member of the Church of Saint Andrew and Saint David, where he held positions of Elder, Steward, Treasurer and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed curling, golfing, sailing, puttering in the garden and belonged to the Westfield Golf and Country Club and the Martinon Yacht Club. He also liked swimming, camping and traveling the world on many trips and cruises with Catherine. His enjoyment of a good meal was only exceeded by his pride in the achievements of his family. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Catherine, John is also survived by their children, David Manning (Darlene) of Waverley, NS, Judy O’Neill (Walter Colwell) of Saint John and Margot Craft of Kingston, ON; sister, Elizabeth Manning of Richmond, QC; grandchildren, Cassandra, Gillian, Laurel, Clinton, Brendan, Eilish, Calvin and Johnathan; precious great-grandson, Beckett; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and son-in-law, Scott. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, Peter Manning. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from the Church of Saint Andrew and Saint David, 164 Germain Street, Saint John on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM. A private interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Church of Saint Andrew and Saint David, Canadian Mental Health Association of NB (SJ Chapter) or a charity of the donor’s choice.
