Obituary of Helen Beatrice Cobham

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Helen Beatrice Cobham (Carruthers), which occurred on Thursday, June 1 2017 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing. Born on September 7, 1920 in West Branch, NB, she was the daughter of the late David and Kate (Murphy) Carruthers. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Burton (2008) and a son, David (1967); as well as two brothers and one sister. Helen is survived by her daughter, Ann (Ron); son, Norman (Maddie); granddaughter, Susan and her children, Shelby and Aiden; step-granddaughter, Melissa (Jim) and children, Matthew, Christopher and Allyson; sister, Greta and many nieces and nephews. Helen was a World War II Veteran who served as a Corporal in the Canadian Women's Army Corps. Post war, Helen moved to Millidgeville where she and Burt built their home. She was an avid quilter who achieved many awards. Helen was an honourary lifetime member of the Marco Polo Guild, lifetime member of the General Hospital Auxiliary and was an honourary member of the Saint John Arts Association. Her quilts hang in Ottawa; as well as California and in the pediatric unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital. Helen lived for her gardens and loved to travel and had been to Ottawa and New York numerous times. She was raised a Presbyterian and later joined the United Church. Although there is no visiting, relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service, which will be held from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 1:00 PM. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. Helen's family would like to express their deepest appreciation to staff of Liberty Lane for their care and devotion. They would also like to thank Sharon McAllister, Marilyn Lester and Margaret Cobham-Mollins for being there for Helen. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ridgewood Veterans Wing-Liberty Lane would be appreciated.
