Obituary of Laura Rosalie McLaughlin

The death of Laura Rosalie McLaughlin of Rocmaura Nursing Home, occurred on Wednesday, December 1, 2004. Born in Saint John she was the daughter of the late Olga (Benson) and the late Morley William McLaughlin, composer of the music of “My Own Canadian Home” that was adopted as the official song of Saint John during the Centennial Year. Miss McLaughlin began her career as a School Teacher in New Brunswick and later taught school in London, England. Upon her return to New Brunswick, she enrolled in the Maritime School of Social Work, Halifax, NS and graduated as a Psychiatric Social Worker. She was first employed by the Province of New Brunswick as a Social Worker with the Mental Health Clinic in Saint John and later as Director of the Department of Social Work at Centracare, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. Rosalie was a longtime member of Full Gospel Assembly, where she taught Sunday School in her earlier years. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by her sisters, Beatrice Clayton and Constance Hamilton as well as a brother, Morley Douglas McLaughlin, a casualty of World War II. She is survived by two nieces, Joyce Phillips of Grand Bay and Nancy Schellenberg of Winnipeg, Manitoba and a nephew, David Hamilton of Saint John, two great nieces, seven great nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one great niece, Patty Quinlan. By request there will be no visiting at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 10:00 AM. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan or World Vision would be appreciated.
