Obituary of George W. Scovil

The death of George Wilson Scovil of Rothesay, NB, husband of Doris V. (Emerson) Scovil, occurred on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, August 10, 1921, he was a son of the late Harry Hutton and Georgie Barnes (Wilson) Scovil. George graduated from Saint John High School in 1939. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served for the duration of World War 11 with the rank of Lieutenant. Following the war he joined the family business of Scovil Bros. Ltd., established in 1889 by George's grandfather. He remained with the business as Vice-President until it closed in December, 1981. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Rothesay and had formerly served on the Vestry. George was a member of Riverside Country Club and the Lancaster Golden Service Club, and a former member of Thistle Curling Club, Westfield Country Club and a 40 year member of Saint John Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife, Doris; sons, Dr. John Emerson Scovil (Deborah) of Saint John and Dr. Robert James Scovil (Deborah) of Halifax, NS; five grandchildren, Carolyn, Susan, Lyndsay, Alexandra and Lauren; and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother John (Jack) Scovil and a sister, Isabel Scovil. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) with visitation on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Monday, December 15, 2003 with service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or the charity of the donor's choice.
