Obituary of Rita M. McLaughlin

The death of Rita (Cavanaugh) McLaughlin, wife of John McLaughlin of Saint John, NB, occurred on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Milltown, NB, on June 3, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Hebert and Annie (Francoeur) Cavanaugh. Rita was dedicated to her faith and was a member of St. Pius X Church. She was a member of the Home and School Program, Blockparent and the CWL. Rita was an avid volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she was a “fixture” in the lobby, selling tickets for fundraisers. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a devoted wife of 58 years. Besides her husband, Rita is survived by her sons, Joseph (Deborah) of Saint John, Wm. Michael of Vancouver, BC, Dr. John L. McLaughlin of Toronto, ON, Robert (Janet) of Quispamsis, Dr. David McLaughlin (Alison) of Edmonton, AB and Peter of Montreal, PQ; daughters, Ann Marie of Quispamsis, Teresa Gallant (Kenneth) of Rothesay, NB and Helen of Vancouver, BC; her brother, Vincent Cavanaugh of London, ON; ten grandchildren, Angella Mercer, Paula Thomas, Catharine Hovey, Joel Machum, Ellen McLaughlin, Mackenzie Gallant, John McLaughlin, Patrick Gallant, Laura and Paul McLaughlin; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Amelia Mercer and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Hubert, A. Bernard, Ignatius, James and Cyril; her sisters, Patricia Dempsey, Frances Leger, Mary and Theresa Cavanaugh. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday from 7 … 9 pm and Monday 2 … 4 and 7 … 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Pius X Church, on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 10:00am. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.
