Obituary of Andreas Papadopoulos

The death of Andreas (Andy) Papadopoulos of Saint John, husband of Yiota (Katrivesi) Papadopoulos, occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home. Born in Greece he was a son of the late Ioannis (John) and Paraskevi (Angelopoulos) Papadopoulos. During World War II, as a boy, he served in the Greek National Resistance as a messenger. In 1956, Andy landed in Canada working as a shoemaker coming to Saint John to open Saint John Shoe Repair. After a successful stint as a shoemaker, he moved into a family restaurant business known as Diana Restaurant at the head of the City Market for many years and was known as “Uncle Andy”. Andy was a dedicated father and loving family man. Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, John Papadopoulos, Dimitri (Wendy) Papadopoulos, Nicolaos Papadopoulos all of Saint John; three sisters, Zoe Angelopoulos of Saint John, Helen, and Georgia both of Greece; two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Andrew Charles, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by one brother, Dimitri and one sister Vasiliki. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Thursday, January 29, 2009 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Centenary Queen Square Day Care Program or Warchild Canada.
