Obituary of John Andrew McDonald

After a long and courageous battle with heart disease, the passing of John McDonald occurred on Monday, September 28, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born on November 11, 1918 at Glasgow, Scotland to the late Patrick and Elizabeth (Park) McDonald. During World War II John served with the British Army in the Highland Light Infantry (HLI) Division. John worked in various shipyards including: shipyards on the Clyde River in Scotland, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York and the Saint John Shipyard from where he retired. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, where he enjoyed playing darts and cribbage. He is survived by his children: John McDonald, John’s children: Ian, Jamie (Karen) and David, Jamie’s children: Emma and Finn all of St. Catharines, ON; Patrick “Pat” McDonald (Donna), Pat’s children, Kate and Jordan all of Saint John and Helen Lawson (Murray) of Seattle, WA, Helen’s children, Lara (Jonathan) of Coldbrook, NS; Lara’s children, Josephine, Jackson and Thomas and Scott (Autumn) of Wichita, KA. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Martin) McDonald in 1977 and daughter in-law Myrna. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 10 am. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held during visiting on Friday at 7 pm. For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
