Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Oliver

The death of Elizabeth “Betty” (Laird) Oliver of Saint John, NB, formerly of New Jerusalem, Queens County, wife of the late Gregory Oliver, occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Burray, Orkney Islands, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Margaret (Thomson) Laird. Betty had owned and operated Oliver’s Grocery on Park Street Extension for many years. She is survived by two daughters, Joan (Danny) Darrah of Herring Cove, NS, Heather (Dennis) Butler of Quispamsis, NB; three sons, Wayne (Nancy) Oliver of Rothesay, NB, Brian Oliver of Kingston Peninsula, NB, Larry Oliver of Saint John, NB; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one sister, Mary (Dwaine) Spicer of Springfield, NB; five brothers, George (Mary) Laird, James (Ruby) Laird, Clarence (Ariel) Laird all of Hampton, NB, Windsor (Margaret) Laird of Edmonton, AB, and Alistair (Betty) of Fenelon Falls, ON; aunt Jessie Sinclair of Scotland, many nieces, nephews and cousins in Scotland. Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by one daughter Paula Michelle in 1981, two sisters, Margaret Boyle, Loretta Shannon; two brothers, Donald and Balfour. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (634-7424) with visiting on Monday, September 28, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel at 11:30 am. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation of NB or a charity of the donor’s choice.
