Obituary of Verdun L. Wilcox

Verdun L. Wilcox of Saint John, husband of Lorna (Hart) Wilcox, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Saint John on April 17, 1916, he was a son of the late George and Myrtle (McLaughlin) Wilcox. Verdun was one of the top trombone players in New Brunswick, playing with St. Mary’s Band for 75 years, the New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra, as well as with Bruce Holder Senior and Junior. Verdun was also an interior decorator and painter, traveled the world, and enjoyed camping, swimming and gardening. Verdun is survived by his son Darryll Wilcox (Marnie) of Saint John; grandchildren Cheryl Carter of Lynchburg, Virginia, Darrin Wilcox (Michelle) of Columbia, South Carolina; great-grandchildren Jake, Nathan, Krista and Donovan Carter, and Dylan and Nicholas Wilcox; a sister, Melba King of Saint John; as well as nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and to his parents, Verdun was predeceased by an infant brother. In keeping with Verdun’s wishes, no formal funeral services will be observed. A private family interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to St. Mary’s Band would be greatly appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
