Obituary of Hedwig Smith

Hedwig "Heidi" Smith of Saint John passed away peacefully, January 2 2014 with her family by her side holding her hand, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Schutzengrund Germany on October 30, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Burnhart and Catherine (Kasinski) Ferairus. After Immigrating to Canada, Heidi worked as a cook in several local restaurants and even after she retired, she enjoyed preparing a large meal for her family each night. Heidi also took in several boarders over the years and always enjoyed knowing the news of the day. Heidi is survived by her daughter Evette Hutchins (Mark) of Saint John, a dedicated friend of the family Michael Dragone, a special niece Jennifer Miller, an "honorary" great grand child Rylan, and daughter Charlene. She was predeceased by her brothers Bruno and Albert. In keeping with Heidi’s wishes, since she disliked anyone making a "fuss", there will be no formal funeral services observed. Heidi’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to the management and staff of the Fairvilla Special care home. She was so happy there. And also would like to thank the staff at 5A North for taking such wonderful care of her, and especially the two nurses who stayed close to them as she made her final journey. For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Association, the Cancer Society and the Shriner’s Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
