Obituary of Harold Gilbert Miller

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Harold Gilbert "Hal" Miller, which occurred at Bobby's Hospice on October 31, 2015, surrounded by his family. Born on May 21st, 1943 in Saint John, Hal was the son of the late Gerald F. and Catherine C. (Chamberlain) Miller. With a family heritage of working on the waterfront, Hal started working with his father Gerald on his line boat at the age of 16, and worked as a line foreman for the Port of Saint John for 40 years until his retirement in 2003. Hal also worked for several years as a real estate agent for Royal LePage in the 1980's. Hal was an avid hockey fan for his entire life, and spent many happy years as a Coach and executive board member with Saint John Minor Hockey, and was immensely proud of that time, in particular with his involvement in the development of the Port City Minor Hockey Tournament. He was a staunch fan of the Saint John Flames, the Saint John Sea Dogs, and of course, his beloved Detroit Red Wings. A deep love of music and spending time with his family and neighbourhood friends rounded out his interests. Hal is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley (Owens); son Stephen of Charlottetown PE, daughter Christine Hines (Brent) of Dartmouth NS, and son Tim (Michelle) of Florenceville NB; brother Norman (Ruth) of Nashua NH; by his grandchildren Charlotte, Jack, Garrett, Maya and Thomas, as well as numerous special brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Hal was predeceased by his uncle Harold Chamberlain, and uncle Tim and aunt Marie (Chamberlain) Lenihan, with whom he was especially close. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bobby’s Hospice for their kindness and professionalism and to Dr. Michael Simon, Dr. Samantha Gray, and the staff of the Oncology Department at Saint John Regional Hospital for their dedication and compassion. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), with visitation being held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will take place at Brenan's Funeral HomeChapel, 111 Paradise Row on November 4, at 2 pm. Internment at St. Joseph's Cemetery will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Hal may be made to Bobby's Hospice, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of meaning to you.
