Obituary of John Malcolm Ferguson

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of John Malcolm "Mac" Ferguson, husband of Phyllis (Dykeman) Ferguson, which occurred on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at his residence in St. John & St. Stephen Nursing Home. Born April 30, 1929 in Saint John, he was the only son of the late Hazen and Dorothy (Strait) Ferguson. Mac graduated from Saint John High School in 1949, after which he worked for Cox Hammett Accounting, from where he earned his Chartered Accountant degree. He later became part owner of Hopper Electrical, and then became Office Manager at Barry Spalding for 12 years, until his retirement. Always active and engaging, Mac joined the Sea Cadets, serving more than 10 years and becoming a Chief Officer. He married the love of his life, Phyllis, in 1955 and they started their family of 3 boys and 1 girl. Mac joined the Boys and Girls Club’s Board of Director in 1972, and continued to serve until his health no longer allowed him to. He became the Club’s treasurer from 1977 through 1979. He served as First Vice-President in 1981-1982 and became the Club President in 1982 and served for 2 terms. His tenure as Past President was 1984-1986. During his time on the Board of Directors, he was chairperson of several committees. In 2012, he was inducted into the Order of Master Builders. Mac was also a member of the Saint John Rotary Club, where he held various positions, including Vice President and President. He was recognized for his outstanding contribution as a Rotarian and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship- the highest recognition bestowed upon a Rotarian. In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Mac is survived by his children: Peter (Kathy), Grant (Andrea Carson), Paul (Kim MacQuarrie), and Jane Machum (Grant); and 10 grandchildren: Amy, Jill, William, Chloe, John, Arthur, Henry, Alexander, Amelia, and Mary. The family would like to thank the staff of St. John and St. Stephen Home for their wonderful care and support of Mac during his time there. Your kindness will not be forgotten. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, 634-7424, with visiting on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
